Individualized Learning Centers

The Discovery Learning Center (DLC), grades 2-4, and the TechLife Learning Center (TLC), grades 5-8, provide unique learning environments for students whose learning styles, cognitive abilities, learning differences, and/or distractibility may make a traditional classroom setting a place of frustration and disappointment, leading to loss of self-confidence and low self-esteem.  In our learning centers, curriculum is individualized for each student in every subject, which allows for authentic, verifiable learning to take place. Instruction is multi-sensory with emphasis upon students becoming strong, independent learners who are able to take responsibility for their own academic success.

Teacher-led instruction happens in very small groups or individually as appropriate, then is supported through technology-based and hands-on learning experiences, as well as written assignments. Personal netbooks or laptops, classroom computers, and personal CD and DVD players are used to provide learning support and to create a learning experience that is positive, challenging, engaging, and productive.

Student progress is reported through mid-quarter Progress Reports as well as quarterly Report Cards.  Progress reports use numeric grades in core subjects    (90↑=A,  80-89=B,  70-79=C,  69↓ =F).  Grades and conduct for extra-curricular classes, and conduct in the main classroom are expressed in E (excellent), V (very good), S (satisfactory), N (needs improvement), or U (unsatisfactory).

Regular parent-teacher conferences are encouraged, with frequency dependent upon individual needs.

Math

Math concepts are introduced through either small group or one-on-one instruction.  The concept is then practiced independently with assistance as needed until it is mastered.  Acquired concepts and skills are reviewed on a regular basis.

Language Arts

The Language Arts program consists of grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and writing.  Grammar instruction focuses on the structure of the English language, teaching parts of speech in relation to sentence structure.  Incremental concept development is coupled with extensive review to increase knowledge and skills retention. Spelling and vocabulary are taught at every grade level.  Writing instruction is presented from a structural perspective.  Students learn to properly construct sentences, paragraphs, essays, and finally research papers (age/grade level appropriate).  Creative/expressive writing skills are also developed.

Reading

The reading program is multi-sensory and utilizes multiple platforms including computer-based curriculum, audio and visual technologies, and traditional print media.  The program focuses on development of both reading fluency and comprehension.  Goals of the reading program include not only technical reading ability and understanding, but also enjoyment of reading and exposure to classic literature.

Social Studies and Science

Placement in science and social studies curriculum is based on the student's reading comprehension level. Concepts are presented and reinforced through a combination of reading/listening activities, computer-based activities, pencil-and-paper activities, and hands-on activities and projects.  Activities and projects will include short-term assignments (to be completed on the day assigned) and age-appropriate long-term projects.

Extra-curricular Classes

Discovery Learning Center and TechLife Learning Center students participate in extra-curricular classes including music, library, P.E., health, critical thinking, writing, and weekly chapel.
