Summary Curriculum Objectives
Kindergarten: Kindergarten
is a very special time of life for every child. Our program is
designed to take advantage of the natural curiosity and love of learning
with which five-year-olds overflow. Our goal is to help our
students mature physically, mentally, spiritually, and socially while
dealing practically with everyday situations.
1st Grade: In the first
grade students work diligently to lay a firm foundation upon which the
rest of their educational years will build. It is our goal to
stir up a desire in children to know more and to love learning.
Learning can and should be fun, as a child's work, at this stage of
life, is play. As the year advances, students encounter more structure
in their daily activities and experiences, preparing them to take on new
learning challenges as they progress through the elementary years.
2nd Grade: Second grade is an exciting
year. It is a transitional year in many ways. Boys and girls
are showing signs of academic maturity that allow for lively classroom
discussions. The curriculum reflects this greater level of
maturity as it deepens and broadens to include many new experiences.
Fieldtrips are an integral part of the curriculum with a visit to the
Museum of Health and Medical Science, a visit from the Museum of Natural
Science's ZooMobile, and a community service project to a local assisted
living facility. Students are introduced to major projects with an
animal report and presentation due in the fall and our wax museum of
historic figures taking place in the spring.
3rd Grade:
Although academic and behavioral expectations are high, the
learning environment is varied, positive, applicable, and supportive so
students may achieve success. They learn responsibility and
organizational skills through the use of assignment planners and
practicing good study skills. Enrichment of classroom skills is
provided through field trip experiences such as delivering soda can tabs
to Ronald McDonald House in Galveston, visiting a local retirement home
on Valentines'Day, fishing with dads and granddads at Sea Center Texas,
and attending plays relevant to the class curriculum.
4th Grade:
Fourth graders stay very busy throughout the year exploring many subject
areas, while gaining crucial organizational skills. History and
science projects enliven and enhance the curriculum, which is
challenging and provides many opportunities to expand and widen student' knowledge base and skills sets.
5th Grade:
Fifth grade is a year of learning, excitement, and activity.
Many hands-on activities are incorporated into the curriculum (e.g.
Chinese water paintings and medieval castle building), enriching and
extending the concepts presented. Learning to think, knowing and
being able to express clearly what a student believes and why, is a
crucial focus of this year. Fieldtrips also play a vital role in the
learning process for fifth graders. Trips to Forbidden Gardens
enrich the study of China, while delivering Christmas gifts to be
distributed to underprivileged children all over the world teaches the
importance of ministry and compassion. The capstone experience for fifth
graders at Westminster Christian Academy is a trip to Washington D.C. to
study and experience first-hand the Christian heritage of our country.
